Postnatal Depression: Symptoms and Strategies - an Insightful RNZ Interview

 
 
 

In a recent interview between RNZ Nine to Noon host Katherine Ryan and Clinical Psychologist Jacqui Maguire, the topic of postnatal depression was discussed.

During the interview, Jacqui discussed the various symptoms of postnatal depression and the significant impact on mothers and non-birthing partners. Citing the findings of the Helen Clarke Foundation research Āhurutia Te Rito | It takes a village. Jacqui revealed that in Aotearoa nearly half of all parents experience some form of mental distress, depression or anxiety during pregnancy or after the birth of their child.

The conversation also focused on the importance of seeking professional help and building a support network. She emphasised that practical support, security, stability and open communication with loved ones are essential components in overcoming postnatal depression. Mothers need to advocate for themselves when talking to professionals and she suggested taking a support person to appointments.
